Minister orders a report

Minister orders a report on employee cuts during COVID-19 pandemic.

The Minister of Labor Nimal Siripala de Silva has ordered the Commissioner General of Labor A. Wimalaweera to submit a report within a week on the complaints received regarding the arbitrary job cuts in the workplaces due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

As there is information that nearly 50 complaints have been received so far, the Minister of Labor has ordered to report to him separately on the complaints and the steps taken by the Department of Labor so far on them.

Although the employers at the COVID-19 Labor Task Force meeting held in March agreed not to lay off any one, according to complaints made by trade unions at a recent meeting of the Labor Task Force, various institutions are now arbitrarily laying off workers.

The Minister has taken this decision as the trade unions have told the Minister that although their unions have lodged a complaint with the Department of Labor, no action has been taken so far.

Meanwhile, an official of the Labor Department told Lankadeepa that the Minister had rejected a request by the employers’ associations to extend the pay scheme, permitted by the government for employers to pay employees half of their salaries until this month.

The Minister pointed out that the Cabinet could not be approached in favor of the half pay request as all sectors other than the tourism sector are currently recovering.

He said that if their production activities were still declining, they could submit the data and statistics confirming this to the next discussion and that the Ministry of Labor would consider doing some justice in those occasions.
