Prime Minister proposes to increase the nutrition for school children.
The Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa instructed the Minister of Education to look into providing a daily egg to improve the nutritional status of school children.
The Prime Minister made this suggestion when he met the Bakery Owners’ Association and the Egg Producers’ Association today at his official residence.
Bakery Producers’ Association apprised the Prime Minister on the impact of high egg prices on bakery products and the Egg Producers’ Association briefed him on the high cost of egg production.
The Egg Producers’ Association emphasized at this meeting that it is possible to provide eggs at a fixed wholesale price to all bakery establishments in the island.
Accordingly, the Prime Minister informed the relevant representatives to reach an agreement between the two associations to provide relief to the consumers.
The Prime Minister instructed the Ministers in charge of the subject to mediate an agreement between the bakery owners and egg producers to reduce the price of a chick to between Rs. 175-200
Lasantha Alagiyawanna, State Minister of Cooperative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection; DB Herath, State Minister for Livestock, Farm Promotion and Dairy and Egg Industries Mrs. Amanda Karunatilake, Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister and other officials of the Egg Producers’ and Bakery Owners’ Associations were also present.
