Government cannot manage
Present government cannot manage the economy, Opposition Leader said.
The Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa stated at a public meeting held in Colombo Central yesterday (01) that the present government has reached a stage where it is unable to manage the country’s economy.
“At a coconut shop in Thimbirigasyaya, one person is given only five coconuts. There is a shortage of tires today. Importation of tires has been stopped. There is a shortage of consumer goods. Our country's open economy has been turned into a closed economy,” he said.
“As the country becomes a closed economy there will be a shortage of goods. When there is a shortage of goods the prices of goods go up. Then the people will be left helpless. This shows that this government cannot control the economy,” Premadasa said.
Meanwhile, addressing a media briefing, Chief Opposition Whip Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella said an era of governance through intimidation will be created in the country, in the event the draft bill of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution is passed.
“According to standing orders every bill has to be changed through the Oversight Committee, but the government scrapped the oversight committees. If the oversight committees were there all these amendments could have been discussed amicably. We have thrown away a golden opportunity,” he said.
“By preventing the bill going to the oversight committee government has shown that they don’t like dissent,” Kiriella said.
